In this booklet, they get an instruction, which might be something like “Draw your card from the deck. Play your energy onto your Pokemon”. When the instructions have been completed, the turn ends, and so begins the fellow player. They have their own, different set of instructions, for their different deck, and over the turns you’ll go back and forth, learning different concepts of game play, but being supported in doing so. Alongside having a solid game plan, a bit of ‘little luck’ can enhance your chances of succeeding in these head-to-head competitions. Even minimal strategic insights, or ‘little strategy’, can influence the outcome of a game, making it accessible to newcomers and casual players.

If you’ve ever wanted to play the Pokemon Trading Card Game, Battle Academy is the ultimate way to do it.
Having trialed various introductory game products over the years, when Battle Academy launched originally, it was vastly different. Generally, trading card franchises seek to either provide a huge amount of upfront information to explain their game (which is confusing, and gets quickly forgotten without context), or rely on vague explanations of what the cards do, leaving players to hope they’ve interpreted the game correctly. I’ve played an astonishing number of games over the years, but I’m rarely able to teach myself a TCG without an experienced player lending a hand from the instructions alone.
With Pokemon Battle Academy, because the cards in the deck are stacked in a specific way (and numbered, so can be returned to their original format if you forget or play with someone new), the instructions are exquisitely specific. As you play a few rounds, the game guides you through different types of cards and how they work, essentially holding your hand with what you’ll need to do with them, until suddenly, the stabilizers are off, and you realize you don’t need them. The steps you’ve taken already have given you everything you need to know, and you’ve learned them gradually, physically used them, and seen the effects of doing so accurately. It means that without knowing a more experienced player who can check your understanding, you can still learn to play in the comfort of your own home. Players can also switch Pokémon decks during the game to lead a different team of Pokémon in battles, enhancing their strategy and gameplay experience.
It also means that you don’t have a significant cost outlay in order to play. You don’t need to buy hundreds of booster packs to put a deck together before you fully understand what a deck should look like, or even how you like to play. Whilst the collectable side of the Pokemon Trading Card game can be costly, playing the game like this certainly isn’t.
Once you’ve mastered the decks in the box, they are admittedly specific to the Battle Academy, which means you can get some cool promo cards within them – which is a nice bonus in itself – but they carry the Battle Academy Logo and the numbering, so aren’t legal for use in professional tournaments, should you wish to carry on playing. However, they also contain a difficulty level (one!), which means they can be played against other pre-built decks of a similar rating, which the Pokemon Company releases fairly regularly. That means that if you’ve been playing a while, and aren’t keen to get into deck building or collecting, you can still play different styles and Pokemon by just buying a few more sets to mix in. Admittedly, in my experience, those from the Battle Academy tend to be trickier to pit against others successfully, but the recent decks are slightly better for this.
Arguably, although the Pokemon Company heavily pitched this initially as a board game, ultimately, it’s just the same trading card game in a board game-sized box, with a fold-out board (albeit a great one). It’s only really a board game in the sense of having a board in the box. Otherwise, it’s just a new way to learn the TCG. For some board gamers, this was a negative, but ultimately, I think it functions as a self-contained unit, meaning you don’t have to go and buy or trade more cards in order to play it, and it makes it a little less intimidating to pick up in general. It might not be a board game in the strictest sense, but it certainly is just as fun.
