Final Girl Board Game Review

People are dying all around you! You try to find something, anything, to use as a weapon. A scared teenager pleads for help. Then you suddenly hear a noise!

In a flash, the killer decapitates the teenager, whose wide-eyed head rolls and stops at your feet. The killer points at you without saying a word. With carnage and death surrounding you, it’s now kill or be killed. YOU are the Final Girl.

Playing the role of the last survivor standing in a horrific killer’s rampage, players do what they can to save victims while trying to find a way to escape from or confront the killer in a final confrontation.

What Is Final Girl Trope?

Final Girl is a single-player horror board game that was designed by Evan Derrick and A.J. Porfirio and published by Van Ryder Games in 2021. Clover’s Final Girl is a significant concept in the analysis of the Final Girl trope, providing a theoretical background and evolution of this character archetype. The Final Girl term arose from the horror movie trope where a female protagonist remains alive at the end of the film after the other characters have been killed and is placed in a position to confront the killer. The final girl board game takes this idea and puts a player in the shoes of the Final Girl as they work their way around a game board and choose how to avoid or confront a killer.

Final Girl Board Game is unique, in that the game can’t be played with just the main box and requires at least one ‘feature film’ box, each of which contains a unique story, location, and killer. Although each game’s mechanics are practically identical, with so many ‘feature films’ available, each game creates a new experience. Like watching the next installment in a series of horror films, it feels like you’re organically playing through a series of games with each being similar but just different enough to feel fresh and exciting.

Definition and Origins

The Final Girl Board Game is a quintessential character trope in horror movies, especially in the realm of slasher films. This term refers to the last girl or woman standing, the one who ultimately confronts the killer after all other characters have met their grisly fates. The concept was first coined by Carol J. Clover in her seminal 1992 book, “Men, Women, And Chain Saws: Gender In The Modern Horror Film.” Clover’s analysis delves into the gender dynamics of horror films, highlighting how the Final Girl is often portrayed as more intelligent and resourceful than her peers. This character is not just a survivor but a symbol of resilience and cunning, embodying the ultimate showdown in the horror film narrative.

Cultural Significance of the Final Girl

The Final Girl has transcended her role in horror films to become a cultural icon, representing female empowerment and survival against overwhelming odds. This character often symbolizes the triumph of wit and willpower over brute force and terror. Interpretations of the Final Girl vary widely; some see her as a reflection of conservative attitudes towards women, while others view her as a means to force male viewers to empathize with a female protagonist during the film’s climax. Moreover, the Final Girl trope offers a lens through which we can examine societal attitudes towards horror and violence, and how these narratives often serve as a form of moral reckoning for the characters’ vices.

Game Set-Up: Core Box

Final Girl Board Game Review

A large part of Final Girl revolves around three separate boards: one for the player, one that represents the location of the game, and one for the killer. The location and killer board will be different in each game and specific to the feature film the player chooses to play through, showcasing unique feature film box features. Each feature film box includes an iconic location that enhances the gameplay experience by allowing players to explore various horror scenarios tied to beloved movie tropes. With the boards come a set of cards, some for the killer (finale and terror cards), some for the location (item and event cards) and action cards from the core box. Once your killer and location have been chosen, players can then choose a Final Girl, as well as the difficulty level for the game. Meeples representing the player, victims and the killer are placed on the board, the bloodlust and timer marker are set, and the game can begin.

How To Play The Final Girl Board Game

Final Girl gameplay consists of five different phases each turn. The player will start by carrying out several actions then plan for their next turn. The killer will then take their turn, after which, depending on what actions the killer took, the victims may act or react. There is then an upkeep phase which comes into play periodically but not every turn. Play then reverts back to the player taking their next actions.

The object of the game is kill or be killed. This means the player, or Final Girl, will need to do their best to rescue potential victims, find items to use, and avoid the killer until it’s safe to try and attack. The Girl makes her moves by playing action cards and resolving them by rolling dice. When taking an action like moving, searching for items or resting, the player will roll dice and use the result to determine how (un)successful they were.

The number of dice is dependant on the current horror level on the player board. A success results in the player being able to carry out the desired action, a partial success allows the player to…partly carry out the action but with a minor repercussion like losing time. If however, a player can discard two action cards this will turn the partial success into a proper one. A fail will lead to significantly more negative implications like increasing the horror level or even ending the action phase immediately! Players can continue playing cards until time runs out, the player has no more cards to play, they choose to end the phase, or the action card forces the phase to end.

After this the planning phase can begin. It’s at this point that players can purchase new cards for the following turn. Some cards cost nothing but others can be purchased at the cost of time. If the timer runs down to zero or a player has ten cards in their hand, this will end the planning phase immediately.

Throughout the game the player will need to make strategic decisions, both in what actions to take and what cards to purchase. Understanding what cards will come in useful in the subsequent turn and how to utilise them is important, as is anticipating what the killer may do on their turn. Saving victims and leading them to an escape space, for example, can be a risky move, but doing so will lead to rewards for the player and help them for future turns. The gameplay is so much fun, especially for fans of horror movies.

On the killer’s turn, the player will draw the top card from their terror deck and complete the actions on it. These normally involve the killer choosing a target, normally whoever is closest or the girl herself, and moving towards or attacking them. How far they can move and how much damage they can deal is based on the killer’s current stats. On their board is listed a number of stats that increase as the bloodlust level does, and likewise reduce as it lowers. For every victim the killer dispatches their bloodlust level will increase by one. With each victim having one health this is quite an easy feat to accomplish, but the girl tends to have more health and I more of a challenge for the killer to take care of. If both do meet and the girl is attacked, there are some action cards that work as reaction cards that they can play which may result in negating any damage.

If a victim was killed during the killer’s phase or shares a space with the killer, this starts the panic phase where the victims will bolt and move a number of spaces equal to the result of a dice roll.

The main purpose of the upkeep phase is to check if it’s time for the finale! Once the killer has played all their terror cards, they may reveal the finale card. This is similar to an action card and remains in play until the end of the game. Some actions will happen immediately upon reveal and some are ongoing, but this will certainly make the game more challenging for the Final Girl overall.

The game continues in this fashion until the Final Girl or the killer or both have been killed.

Subversions and Parodies of the Final Girl

In recent years, the Final Girl trope has undergone numerous subversions and parodies, adding layers of complexity to this iconic character. Modern horror movies have reimagined the Final Girl, presenting her as a flawed and multifaceted individual. Take, for instance, Samantha Carpenter from “Scream” (2022), who uses her past trauma and inner strength to overcome the killers. These contemporary interpretations challenge the traditional Final Girl narrative, making her more relatable and human. By doing so, they enrich the horror genre, offering fresh perspectives and deeper emotional resonance. This evolution reflects a broader trend in horror movies, where characters are no longer mere archetypes but fully realized individuals with their own stories and struggles.

Final Verdict on Slasher Films

final girl board game season 2

Final Girl is an entertaining and interesting game. It captures the essence of what made slasher movies and horror films great perfectly and gives you the sense of being in the film itself. That said, although the game has lots of options for extra games to purchase, it does come at an extra cost as you cannot play the game with just the core box and must buy the extras. This may put some people off, as will the fact that only one player can play at a time, but that aside the game is truly thrilling. There’s plenty going on in the game and lots to enjoy. It looks and plays great and is the perfect game for Halloween.
