Literally, the closest thing you can find to Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder is a fantasy RPG based on the theme and many of the core concepts behind the game, but adds its own twist to the rules and mechanics. It’s one of the easiest games to learn if you’re coming off D&D as they’re nearly identical, and with lots of familiar faces it’s one of the best games to transition into.
Pathfinder keeps the fantasy setting you’ll find in D&D and places players in a whole new world to explore. The concept is the same whereby players have almost limitless freedom to explore the world and go about interacting with it as they please. A Game Master reigns them in where necessary and keeps the game on track when possible. Utilising the same D20 mechanics D&D does makes skill checks and combat not only simple but very similar to how they work in Dungeons and Dragons. Character creation is fairly straightforward and experienced gamers will find some of the races, stats, spells, and abilities to be very familiar, but just with a different name. This is because the games 1st edition was based on D&D’s 3rd, and even with Pathfinder on it’s 2nd edition, they’ve revised and refined the rules but not made any drastic changes. It’s a fairly straightforward game to learn to play, no harder than Dungeons & Dragons anyway, and offers many, many options for character creation, setting, and rules with it’s dozens of sourcebooks available.

Starfinder is another great transitional game for fans of Dungeons and Dragons, especially those who have always wanted to swap fantasy for science fiction. Essentially the rules between Star and Pathfinder are very similar but there are many thematic changes to accommodate for the setting. Set in the same universe as it’s fantasy-based cousin, just many, many years in the future, players will go out on missions, interacting with the world, solving mysteries, and engaging in rich combat. Players will get to experience both new and familiar with Starfinder; they’ll swap their bows and arrows for lasers and horse and cart for starships, but they may still come across some Orcs and Elves along the way too. That and the odd seven-armed starfish!
Starfinder is certainly a solid choice that adds just enough to keep the experience familiar yet new and exciting for players.
Cyberpunk – A lot less buggy than the video game!
Sticking with science fiction, Cyberpunk transports players to the year 2045, where in Night City, gang warfare, corporate rivalries, and political machinations are the norm and obstacles that they must overcome in this roleplaying game.
Set after a fictional conflict between the United States and Central America, and following economic collapse and food shortages, megacorporations have risen to power and fight for dominance. Players will create a character with various bioengineered modifications (which they’ll upgrade as time goes on) and take on the role of the like of hackers, mechanics, or road warriors. There are plenty of futuristic weapons and types of equipment players can outfit themselves with, as well as be able to kit themselves out in the fanciest and latest fashion trends. Players will be able to upgrade their skills as time goes on, and their characters will be fleshed out with developing their goals and motivations. They’ll even be able to ‘jack in’ and explore the net in a number of different ways whilst alternating their actions between the physical and virtual world.
A really interesting and immersive game, Cyberpunk earns the title of it’s namesake and does and excellent job of putting players in a whole new world.
Call of Cthulhu – The ultimate tabletop game because Cthulhu > Dragons any day!
From fantasy, to sci-fi, to horror, RPGs come in all shapes and sizes and this is one of the best for fans of the latter. Based on the prolific work of H.P. Lovecraft, players are thrust into a world of intrigue as they try to get to the bottom of all kinds of strange goings on whilst trying to keep their sanity in tact.
Initially released over forty years ago and currently on it’s 7th edition, Call of Cthulu takes the dark and supernatural works of H.P. Lovecraft and challenges players with tackling the strange, bizarre, and terrifying. Set in the early 1900’s, players act as investigators, reporters, and scholars, who must use their skills to overcome various challenges set by the Keeper (Dungeon Master). The game takes quite a few steps away from D&D as far as mechanics go but is still a fairly easy system to get to grips with. It puts more focus on character development and role playing rather than combat. Player in fact won’t have their characters ‘level up’ like in other games, but will instead see their skills develop as time goes on. Interestingly however, a players HP never increases, which adds an interesting challenge to the game. Instead of using D20, players will use a D100 as a percentile dice when trying to complete all different kinds of tasks. It’s no less complicated than most other RPGS and is a refreshing change.
If you’re a fan of horror and want more of a character-driven game, this is certainly one to try, whether you’re familiar with Cthulhu or not.
Blades In The Dark – The role playing game where Jack the Rippers got nothing on you!
Character and narrative driven, Blades in the Dark is a tabletop game that puts players together as a crew of daring scoundrels seeking their fortunes on the haunted streets of an industrial-fantasy city. Heists, chases, occult mysteries, and bloody skirmishes abound, as do riches if players play their cards right. Literally and figuratively.
In Blades, players form a crew of criminals, each playing a different role, and take part in illegal activities called ‘scores’. This could include anything from robberies to smuggling, or assassinations. Each score is overseen by the game master and players take time to discuss their plans and tactics in tackling it. Players will have various skills and abilities they can use to aide them, and can even utilise a stress mechanic to assist them. Accumulating stress can help with the outcome of dice rolls, but having too much stress and can have dire consequences, so the balance is very important. If successful, players can use downtime after to do things like heal from wounds or take part in recreational activities. As time goes on, a crew will accumulate more wealth, fame, and notoriety. But they must be careful as sometimes their actions will come back to haunt them. Literally.
A great game for players more interested in character interaction and development, the game does an excellent job at setting the scene of a gothic-industrial world.
